Ethical Challenges in Self-Care: Balancing Professional Duties with Personal Well-being
Abstract
Title: At the Crossroads of Duty: The Ethical Dilemma of Physician Self-Care in the Pursuit of Patient Welfare
Physicians are revered for their unwavering commitment to patient care, often placing the needs of others above their own. Yet, behind the stethoscope lies a professional paradox: How can one uphold the ethical duty to care for patients while neglecting the ethical imperative to care for oneself?
This lecture will explore the ethical tensions that arise when physicians face burnout, emotional distress, chronic illness, or personal crises—all while continuing to shoulder the sacred responsibility of healing others. Using real-life case studies and guided ethical frameworks, I will examine the collision between the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and professional competence.
I will critically explore scenarios involving physician fatigue, bereavement, mental health challenges, and moral injury—each illustrating the moral distress that emerges when professional obligation threatens personal well-being. I will also delve into the institutional, cultural, and systemic forces that perpetuate this imbalance.
This timely and critical seminar is designed to support healthcare professionals in navigating the unique mental and ethical demands of medical practice.
